SPEED RACER LOSES THE RACE & DOESN’T LOSE WEIGHT
As a boy, I regularly watched the TV show, “Speed Racer.” What does that have to do with weight loss? Well, unfortunately, I’ve eaten like Speed Racer my entire life. I’m a fast eater. The hungrier I am or the more delicious the food looks, the faster I scarf..the faster I devour. Notice I didn’t mention chewing faster. The fact is I often eat so fast I don’t chew enough and wind up with the hiccups or my body just forces me to slow down. If you do this too, here’s a new incentive to slow down and maybe lose weight by doing it.
A new study from researchers in Greece reveals that if and when you eat slowly, it can boost the healthy levels of a pair of hormones that can make you feel full. The researchers took blood samples from people who took 30 minutes to eat and compared those with people who took 5 minutes to eat the same thing. They concluded that if you take longer to eat, your small intestine may make more of these two hormones for a longer period of time. Thus, you can lose weight by eating slowly because it makes you feel more full.
Now if only we could master that other lesson about eating one thing and then waiting 15 minutes to see if we’re still hungry, right?
