The transition to motherhood is a profound step in a woman’s life. Becoming a mother is a life-changing experience and motherhood is a lifelong role. Although motherhood is universal in many aspects, the transition into it is very individualized. Our past childhood relationships with our mothers, our fathers and the overall connection we experienced in our parents’ marriages form the backdrop for our emotional readiness for motherhood. Therefore, individualized preparation and care is far more effective when it deals with a woman’s specific “birth inventory,” which is a profile of her significant fears and concerns about upcoming motherhood and childbirth.
If you are a new mom who is struggling with the life changes of new motherhood, trying to take care of your new baby, feeling sleep deprived, and overwhelmed with your new responsibilities, your patience and tolerance will be stretched thin. Many women do not seek treatment because of the shame or guilt they feel about not enjoying motherhood at a time when there is tremendous societal and familial pressure to be a “perfect mother.
Although a natural and healthy part of human life, becoming a mother is hard work and it takes every nook, cranny and crevice of a woman’s being. We now know how both physical and psychological health are profoundly impacted by everything from stress to being in love, from positive and negative attitudes, from fear to gratitude.
Pregnancy is a time of many questions about pregnancy symptoms, weight gain, what’s safe to eat while pregnant, prenatal tests, labor and delivery, and more. With increasing rates of obesity in the United States, postpartum weight retention is an important factor to consider when assessing maternal health and pregnancy outcome. Mothers may suffer “maternal depletion syndrome,” which refers to the combination of depression, low libido, excess weight and fatigue that can accompany motherhood. Don’t be surprised if it takes nine months to a year to regain your pre-pregnancy weight.
Women who have healthy babies gain varying amounts of weight during pregnancy. If you are at a desirable weight for your body size before you become pregnant, a weight gain of 24 to 27 pounds is recommended. If you are approximately 20 pounds or more above your desirable weight before pregnancy, a weight gain of 24 pounds is recommended. The average weight gain during pregnancy is between 25 to 35 pounds. The weight that you gain is a rough indication of how much nutrition is available to the fetus for growth. If a woman has 10 extra pounds, then taking two months to lose that weight is absolutely normal.
Believing that after giving birth the pre-pregnancy shape and weight will return immediately is a sure way to become frustrated. Most women will gain weight appropriately during pregnancy if they follow a healthy eating pattern according to Canada’s Food Guide to Healthy Eating, maintain an active lifestyle and allow their appetite to guide their energy intake. But various medical conditions during pregnancy such as gestational diabetes and hypertension can add an additional 10 to 15 pounds to a pregnancy weight leaving more postpartum weight for Mom to lose. Many women mourn their inability to lose the weight, but the reasons behind these unsuccessful attempts are sometimes no fault of the women. Women whose gestational gain exceeds the recommended range are more likely to retain weight at one year postpartum than are women with gains within the recommended range.

Stress causes your adrenal glans to raise your cortisol level which leads to many health issues, one of them being weight gain. There is a solution though, so don’t get stressed.

I’ve been reading a lot of blog posts lately about how people are eating all the right foods and the right proportions but are not losing weight or even still gaining weight. There is a lot of reasons this could be happening, but when I look closer into the lives of these people I can see the probable reason. It’s scientific name is STRESS.

Your body is an incredible machine. When your body feels a change from the ordinary it goes into defense mode. Your Adrenal Glans start producing the hormone cortisol. It is needed for regulating blood sugar, energy production, inflammation, the immune system and healing.

If you introduce stress, your adrenal glans will elevate your cortisol level. Any type of stress will do that. It could be stress from work, the TV you watch like the news, the environment you live in, or even the foods or lack of certain foods you eat.

A high level of cortisol will more than likely lead to weight gain among other things, I’ll get to those in a moment.

This is also why so many weight loss plans or diets fail. It’s because you are fighting against your adrenal glans that are releasing high levels of cortisol, which usually end up going strait to your abdominal area. You need to work with your body and feed it everything it needs, all the proper foods and keep it fed. Eating small meals and snacks of good healthy food all day long works well. It is the only kind of weight loss plan or diet that seems to work long term without any health risk. In other words, “Healthy Weight Loss”.

The other problems with a high level of cortisol are that it slows down your metabolism. Your immune system is also suppressed which can cause all kinds of problem and makes you prone to many illnesses. The stomach lining becomes thin which could cause stomach ulcers. It will cause your blood sugars to rise and digestion to slow.

Are you starting to get the picture? Stress causes problems.

It turns into a vicious cycle, stress causes problems that cause more stress, which leads to bigger problems and so on.

The health problems that stress ultimately lead to are numerous. Weight gain is only the tip of the iceberg. Where it adds the weight is what could be the killer.

The only way to avoid costly future visits to the doctor and hospital are to figure out how to lower your stress level and get on a healthy weight loss plan, even if you are not overweight. A healthy weight loss plan will teach you a lot about nutrition.

So learn to relax more. Listen to some soothing music. Take up yoga or meditation. Take a walk or jog by yourself and brainstorm some ideas that will lead to happiness. Find you own little sanctuary where you can sit or lay alone quietly. Learn not to sweat the little things. Nothing is so major that you can’t think of a solution. Most of the things we stress over turn out to be minor and the solution most of the time leads to a better way of life.

50 years ago, people who lived near fresh water springs probably joked about the absurdity of bottling their pure water and making some extra cash for themselves. Who would ever pay for water when they can get it totally free out of their tap? Well just look at us now! Little did they know that it would become a trend to not only drink bottled water, but some people pay through the nose for it to enhance weight loss and wellness!

Why do we now consider tap water to be so dangerous? What happened to make us think that we should buy bottled water in the grocery store? Is it just a genius marketing ploy to make us think we need something we really don’t…like Starbucks and Blu-Ray movies? And more importantly, how can we really know for sure that bottled water is even any better for us?

Bottled water or not, we all need water…especially if we are trying to lose or maintain weight in a safe, healthy way. Believe it or not, the United States has some of the highest tap water standards in the world. Higher, in fact, than the standards set by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for bottled water.  Bottled water makes more sense in countries where portable water is scarce, but the United States now consumes more bottled water than any other country in the world. Bottled water, which is regulated by the FDA, is not tested as thoroughly or as frequently as tap water, which is regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency. Obviously, we are a nation that falls for fads..and we fall hard!

The proof is in history. Have you ever heard of anyone becoming unhealthy because they drank tap water instead of bottled water? I have not. I have never heard of anyone getting fat or being deprived of vitamins and minerals from drinking tap water either. Perhaps there is a small taste difference, but certainly not enough to warrant spending an extra $20 a week in this time of economic crunch.

What people should be worrying about are the other liquids they are drinking on a daily basis. Why worry about water when it contains nothing harmful to your body? Drinks like carbonated soda, fatty latte’s and smoothies and anything with diet on the label are the real culprits for bad health and weight gain.

Soda not only fills your body with unnecessary sugar and salts, it depletes calcium from your bones! The process of making diet sodas is even worse. The same ingredients that are used in floor cleaners are used to make sodas. Think about that the next time you are trying to decide between a Dr. Pepper and a Root Beer. I would not have to go out on a limb here to say that free tap water or bottled water is a much healthier choice than either of these.

How about all those fruit juice ads you see? You know the ones…where they depict fresh fruit being picked right off the trees and being squeezed right into the bottle for you. Would it not be great if this were true at affordable prices? The next time you think this is a healthy choice to enhance weight loss and wellness, picture the manufacturers mixing that fresh fruit juice with sugar and preservatives. This is what is really happening. Is tap water and bottled water sounding better yet?

The biggest culprit to all of these is probably the consumption of alcohol. Any unhealthy drink limited to an occasional consumption is not harmful, but alcohol is even more addivctive than soda and fruit juices. Do I really need to go into all of the health benefits of avoiding alcohol? We have heard them all before. Even when you drink alcohol, you will need even more tap water to hydrate your system afterwards…so just skip it all together!

Not to get off the subject, but these are the drinks that you should really be worried about avoiding if you are serious about how to enhance weight loss and wellness.  It is not about the small differences between bottled water and tap water. Simply put, there is no need to drink store bought bottled water in the United States and Canada unless you want flavor. There is just not enough of a difference. Both are healthy.

The cheapest and healthiest option is to purchase a water filter pitcher and filter your own tap water. You will get a slightly healthier water, but it will only make a difference if you avoid other unhealthy drinks. Like the convenience of carrying bottled water around? Fill your tap water into an empty bottle before you leave your house! Problem solved and money saved.

All municipal water suppliers are required to provide annual water-quality reports to their customers…and it’s free! You can then choose a home water filtration system that specifically rids your water of any local contaminants. Home bottling is also the safest and most environmentally friendly alternative. It may take you 2 minutes to refill your pitcher each day, and another minute to fill your bottles, but it is well worth all that extra effort instead of spending your money on bottled water (and the gas it takes to drive to the store to buy it)!

When you put the right kinds of foods into your body and keep out the wrong kinds of drinks, you do not need to worry about  the small differences between bottled water and tap water. Water is water. It is essential to enhance weight loss and wellness and control weight management.  Bottled water or not, it will always be the healthiest beverage you can drink.

I’ll admit it. One of the hardest things I have ever done in my life is trying to lose weight. Not because of lack of motivation or commitment, no, I had PLENTY of that. The problem for me was deciding on the ‘how’. It seems as if everywhere you look, there is a new diet out on the market that promises incredible way to help you lose weight and have a perfect body. The before and after weight lose all look fantastic and are enough to sway just about anyone who is desperate to achieve the body they desire.

The choices seem endless and all too often, at least for me anyways, I ended up making the wrong choice. So, how does someone know what is the RIGHT weight loss program for them? The first step in any successful weight loss management is and will always be an exercise program which may include weight strength training. Nothing is a substitute for getting up and getting moving.

Check with your doctor, make sure you have no health problems that would prevent you from getting physical, and get to it! Jumping rope, jogging, even brisk walking will start the calories burning and get your program off to a great start. In addition, make sure to add some resistance training to your regimen. For those less experience out there, this means weight lifting. Don’t groan, I know what you’re thinking, but here are the facts.

Muscle burns fat. The more muscle you have, the more fat you will burn. Even while you are sitting down watching TV, your muscles will be burning fat. Now, don’t think that just because I am talking about lifting some weights you are going to turn into some bulky bodybuilder. That just doesn’t happen. Your physique will become toned, your muscles will start to show, and your clothes will fit better. All the things you want to have happen. Now, exercise alone may not be all you need.

For some of us, quality weight losing programs are what we need in addition to our exercise routines, but back to the original question, how do we know which one to pick? When choosing a weight loss plan or product, the key thing to keep in mind is, “Is this something that I could do?” Be sure to learn all the parameters of the program or product and ask yourself this question. Try to picture yourself following the guidelines and outlined and be realistic with yourself. Is this something you will really stick to? Does the cost fit into your budget? Are there any special foods or supplements you will need to purchase?

Many people begin weight loss program with the best of intentions, but decide later on that they made the wrong choice. Had they done a little more research beforehand, they likely would have had more success.

How to lose weight is an issue for many people all over the world. The health implications alone are certainly a reason to take some action, but it is the results we see as our bodies’ change that really motivates us to continue and hopefully, eventually succeed. If you take your time, do your research, commit to an exercise regimen as well as a program or product that is right for you, then you too can join the thousands of people every year who have success with a weight loss program.

This year, this time, you’re going to finally look forward to bathing suit season. If you start now, and you stick to your weight loss program, you’ll be poolside in a bikini, showing off your hot “bod” all summer long! Here are a few of our favorite summer weight loss tips. Comb through these, and we’ll see you at the beach!1. Take advantage of spring seasonal foods. Broccoli, spinach, new potatoes, snow peas and asparagus are at their freshest from March to May – so make sure to add them to your daily menu. Apricots, avocado, strawberries, and mango ripen in the spring as well. There’s no need to skimp on the taste with all these delicious foods in season.2. Make cardio workouts a part of your day. Jogging, power walking, aerobics classes, and even dance classes are perfect for that summer goddess frame. Make sure to get your heart pumping for 30 -45 full minutes each day. And for an extra calorie burner, if you live near the beach, take your walk in the sand – the additional effort will get those pounds melting off.3. Tighten up those abs. No woman wants her gut to ooze out of her swimsuit. There are plenty of other ways to lose that tummy besides doing sit-ups. Try leg lifts, exercise ball crunches, torso twists and other innovative ways to strengthen the abdominal area.4. Give your swimsuit a workout! That’s right! Hop into that bikini, even in the depths of winter, and head to your local indoor pool for a swim at least twice a week. Swimming laps is a great calorie burner, and the water resistance will help you tone the entire body. What even more cool is that your bathing suit will fit like a second skin by the time summer rolls around!5. Drink lots of water. You should down about 100 ounces per day of water. Cut back on the soda, diet drinks, smoothies, and coffee. Not only will water help you lose weight, giving you that extra energy boost for your workouts, it’ll make your skin smooth, healthy, and young for the summer.6. Set weekly weight goals. You want to lose 30 pounds by Memorial Day weekend? Great! But you’re more likely to get there if you take it week by week, instead of freaking out because you haven’t lost 30 pounds every time you get on the scale. Put your weight loss goals in your personal planner, and set your schedule accordingly.7. Exercise your willpower. So many of us think we have no will power when it comes to eating, but, really, we do. If tap into that will power, we can get rid of the “junk in the trunk” while still enjoying the things we love. Don’t sit there and obsess while everyone else is having dessert. Ask for a fork, and take exactly two bites. You’ll enjoy it so much more than if you withhold that pleasure, than choking down a whole piece in front of the fridge at midnight because you feel deprived.8. Get inspired. Every year, in the depths of winter, Sports Illustrated and other magazines catering to men come out with swimsuit issues. Those women look great, don’t they? Buy a copy, tear out some of the pictures and hang them up where you need the most inspiration, near the scale, on the fridge, or on the pantry door. Put one on the mirror in the bathroom or right on your alarm clock, so you don’t go back to sleep when the alarm goes off extra early for that morning exercise session!9. Treat yourself in other ways. Let’s say you get one of those caloric coffee confections every morning before work – but now you can’t, because you want to take off the weight for summer. Why not use that money for something nice for yourself? Get a massage at the local spa. Buy a second swimsuit for that hot body you’ll be showing off.

Many different pictures come to mind when people hear the words self hypnosis for weight loss.  You may think of somebody laying on a couch being talked to in a soothing voice or maybe what comes to mind is one of those old TV shows where someone was hypnotized by a shiny, dangling watch.  Although you may have preconceived notions about self hypnosis for weight loss, it is practiced by hundreds of thousands of people around the world and is highly effective when done properly.Self hypnosis for weight loss is pretty easy to practice.  You use techniques such as visualization and positive self talk to program your mind to think in a new way after you have brought your body into a completely relaxed state.STEP 1The first thing you need to do to practice self hypnosis for weight loss is to get comfortable.  Laying down will work best, just make sure you don’t fall asleep.  To release tension in your body start by tensing then relaxing each part of your body starting from your forehead down to your toes.  While you’re doing this you can visualize standing under a gentle waterfall and imagine that the water flowing over your body is washing away all your tension.STEP 2Next you’ll want to focus on your breathing. Imagine that when you are inhaling pure, fresh oxygen is filling up your body.  As you slowly exhale repeat the word relax to yourself.  To deepen your sense of relaxation you can visualize yourself going down a long flight of stairs slowly or or simply count down from 100 as you focus on your body relaxing more and more.STEP 3Once you are completely relaxed you will use positive affirmations to address the issues concerning you.  If you’re using self hypnosis for weight loss you may want to try suggestions like “I enjoy the taste of fruit and vegetables,” “I love how I feel after I exercise,” “I enjoy being slim and fit.” You just need to keep repeating these affirmations until you feel satisfied.STEP 4To come back to awareness simply count from 0 to 10 while focusing on the numbers until you feel completely awake.  You may have to count from 0 to 10 more than once until you feel ready to get up and start normal activities again.Developing your own self hypnosis for weight loss program will go a long way to helping you finally overcome the obstacles holding you back from losing weight and keeping it off.
