When it comes to having Lap-Band surgery, many things need to happen before you can say, “I did it!” While the surgery is elective, a good surgeon’s team will have you jump through a number of hoops to see that you qualify for the surgery, and that you know exactly what you are entering into with this weight loss procedure.

A friend of mine is scheduled for surgery this week. She has undergone a number of different medical tests. They also wanted her to go through a three week preparation process but she refused. She told them she was ready for it. She already made up her mind that she wanted to have the surgery. She just wanted to get it done.

Over a lunch discussion this weekend, she began to elaborate on all of the different changes that take place as a result of undergoing Lap-Band surgery.  For example, she said she will not be able to drink while eating a meal. Eating and drinking must be done separately. No fast food. Gone will be some of her favorite foods. No Rib-Eye steaks because of the grease. Breads and cheeses will also be removed from her menu of choice.

The friend who enlightened her about the benefits of having Lap-Band surgery has created her own tremendous before and after weight loss pictures as a result of it. In less than one year she has already dropped 90 pounds.

Lap-Band surgery is less invasive than bariatric surgery. She can have her band adjusted as time goes by. If she wants to increase her food intake she can have the band adjusted. If she wants to decrease her food intake, she can do that as well.

This process is not something that would work for me. For now the fat man in me will be unleashed through an improved diet and exercise. The bottom line is I have my doubts if I could give up breads completely! But I sure do see the positive results of Lap-Band surgery.

Is it worth the sacrifices? Is it worth $10,000 to $15,000? Are these the weight loss pictures you want to create? If so, how much do you want to see them come to life? Mary looked at me and asked what was so funny. I told her what she said was not true. She said it was. I asked her to prove it. She thought about it for a minute and then she smiled. It was a bigger smile.

If she kept believing those distorted weight loss images, she would keep getting the same frustrating and disappointing results.

Mary made a vow to herself to continue to look at before and after weight loss photos, but to do it with the belief that those people she so admires were just like her. If they could do it, then she can, too.
